Brudering on Indifference

I think the greatest source of danger in this
world is indifference. I have always believed
that the opposite of love is not hate, but in-
difference. The opposite of life is not death,
but indifference. The opposite of peace is not
war, but indifference to peace and indifference
to war. The opposite of culture, the opposite
of beauty, the opposite of generosity is indif-
ference. Indifference is the enemy.
-- Elie Wiesel

Now, substitute 'tolerance' for 'indifference'. The two words are close to synonymous but the virtues of tolerance are extoled everywhere. Could there be a reason why rich, white, capitalist countries want their populace to be tolerant - want them to be indifferent... just remember, don't rock the boat.

  • Someone was talking to me a few days ago about "postive tolerance" and "negative tolerance", which I assume to mean the difference between liberal and evangelical ideas of tolerance respectively. An interesting way to look at tolerance.
You're right, though, tolerance takes on a whole different face when you're talking about tolerating evil and injustice.
