This actually reminds me of a movie I really liked which was quite formative for me: Mr Smith Goes to Washington, a black and white classic starring James Stewart. The key quote I remember was (imagine a classic American movie accent) "The only causes worth fighting for are the lost ones". It sounded really idealistic and cool, but never really made sense until the quote above fleshed out the idea.
