Darfur: have you heard of it?
There's something perversely appropriate about using Flash cartoons to communicate genocide (and international political side-stepping of said ongoing genocide) to the MTV generation. Darfur is the ongoing genocide that doesn't just go away, no matter how many people want it to. With 300,000 dead, not to mention 2 million people without homes or proper living conditions it stretches the limits of meaning to try to 'play it down.
This time there's no oil to attract cowboy crusaders, and no white tourist faces to attract massive giving, outrage or even mild concern. Just Africans, thousands of Africans that nobody wants to know about.
Step 1: view 'Darfur: Never Again...Again'
Step 2: voice mild concern to anyone who'll listen...
For example:
minister.downer@dfat.gov.au
A.Downer.MP@aph.gov.au
A.Albanese.MP@aph.gov.au
Tanya.Plibersek.MP@aph.gov.au
Kevin.Rudd.MP@aph.gov.au
I'm sure you can think of others. Remember, it's not just the people in office who need to be contacted - writing to those who you suspect would agree with you ensures that they continue to and gives them something to talk about when they try to push an issue, the 'many' of people who have written to them with concern over the issue etc.
