The Cost of the War

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."

President Dwight D. Eisenhower
April 16, 1953

An impressive quote for an American president. Quite articulate and principled. That was what, 50 years ago.

There a sobering website up now that has a running tally of US public money spent on Iraq. It can break them down by state and also provide comparisons of how the money could be otherwise spent. For example at present the cost of the war would have allowed the US to fund world-wide anti-hunger efforts for 5 years or alternatively to fund world-wide AIDS relief programs for 12 years. etc.
