Accomplice in assasination of Oscar Romero tried in absentia a quarter of a century later
Oscar Romero was a Catholic priest made Archbishop in El Salvador who challenged the corrupt powers that be and supported the peasants of the country in their fight against various forms of oppression.
From the article:
"An assassin's bullet felled the archbishop on March 24, 1980, as he celebrated Mass in San Salvador."
As The Gutless Pacifist says, it doesn't get much colder than assassinating a human rights activist who's a priest on a Sunday right in the middle of Mass in a predominantly Catholic country (and continent) because he asked that the poor of the country not be trodden into the mud.
There's actually a very good movie on his life callede "Romero". Check it out, or check out this free e-book, "The Violence of Love", of his writings.
