Australian Police Given Power To Use Spyware

Care of Slashdot, this article reports that our police now have the power to spy on us electronically. Specifically to:

"obtain warrants to secretly install spyware onto users computers enabling them to monitor email, online chats, word processor and spreadsheets entries and even bank personal identification numbers and passwords"

As long as you're not suspected of being a terrorist they even have to ask for a warrant! ... isn't it great to see Australia catching up with the oppressive laws of other nations?

It could be worse, one Slashdot comment reads:
> I vaguely remember there's a country where it is illegal
> to obstruct surveillance by way of encryption.

The UK, I believe?

Where its illegal to 'possess any information which might be useful to a terrorist'

Such a liberal minded people, the Brits, eh?
